5 Ways to Get Your Newborn to Sleep Longer
In order to be stress-free, parents must learn some tips on how to get a newborn to sleep longer such as: create a routine, sing a lullaby, keep your baby dry, give a warm bath, and cuddle safely.
A newborn is a delicate creature that needs to be looked after nearly every single minute of the day. Parents sometimes get frustrated because things can be very unpredictable. Sleep is one common concern parents usually find very challenging because their baby's sleep schedule will change from time to time. To lessen the burden on the parents, some things needs to be done to keep the baby asleep for longer periods of time, including:
Create a routine
If you want your baby to sleep in a consistent manner, try creating a routine by putting him to bed at exactly the same time every day. This will eventually develop into a pattern that is constant and unfailing. Aside from the time, a routine must consist of a series of activities such as bathing, feeding, and cuddling. All these things, when done properly, may assist babies to fall asleep and stay asleep longer.
Sing a lullaby
Most, if not all babies, find lullabies soothing. Every time they hear something that seems like music to their ears, they tend to relax until they become sleepy. However, aside from singing, listening to music or the soothing sounds from a white noise machine may also contribute a lot to keeping the baby still and unruffled.
Keep your baby dry
One most common cause of sleep disturbance in babies is a wet diaper. Constant friction may result in the development of rashes or even skin maceration. The baby's diaper must be closely monitored to prevent such occurrences. Being soaked for prolonged periods of time can bring about discomfort and restlessness. You can expect frequent interruption during sleep regardless of the time of the day when the baby's diaper is wet.
Give a warm bath
A warm bath can be a good way of encouraging a baby to fall asleep. Since the warm water increases blood circulation within the body, the bath may help flush out toxins and waste products, which can be a potential source of uneasiness. This will lessen tendencies of waking up in the middle of the night due to bloating or other signs of distress.
Cuddle safely
Babies feel safe and secure when hugged tightly and close to its mother's body. When babies feel comforted and loved they have less anxiety caused by physical discomfort. Knowing that they are in good hands is already a big consolation for newborns because they can simply forget anything and concentrate on what they enjoy doing, which is sleeping.
Whenever babies experience sleep disturbances, make sure you know how to identify the cause. Feeding may not always be the solution, so you must be able to recognize your baby's needs and address them accordingly. Remember to individualize and not generalize.

A Review of the Marpac Sound Screen 980
The Marpac Sound Screen 980 costs more than any other noise machine I've seen. Is it really worth that price?
As a former professional musician and chronic graveyard shift worker, much of my sleeping has taken place when the sun was up. This creates challenges the night sleeper probably never considers. The two biggies for me were keeping the room dark, and drowning out the noise.
Since more people are out and about during the day, you have the constant drone of traffic, apartment doors slamming, phones ringing, and stereos and TV's blaring. For me, the battle raged constantly. There were months that I ran on 2 to 3 hours of sleep a day. Ouch!
I tried wearing earplugs, but after a while the inside of my ears became raw and painful. Leaving a fan on all day helped, but I'd wake up with a sore throat and dry sinuses. I even bought some really expensive, noise-deadening headphones, but they were too bulky to sleep with.
Then a friend introduced me to white noise generators. The first one I bought was relatively inexpensive, and worked well for a little while. Then I noticed that it was just playing a sound loop over and over. After that, I started to notice tiny clicks where there shouldn't be any. It soon became more of a liability, and I put it away.
More recently however, I started searching aggressively for something that would do what I needed it to do. Money was not an issue to me anymore. I needed sleep.
What struck me first about the Marpac Sound Screen 980 when I took it from the box was its size. I never thought about how tiny 5.75 inches by 3.25 inches was. And lightweight, at just over a pound and a half. I wondered if it could really do the job.
When I turned the unit on, I noticed the sound it generates comes from a small fan. I found the sound of rushing air somewhat relaxing. I was also surprised by the volume of sound a small unit like this can generate. I don't think a door slamming in the next room would have disturbed me. Its 8 foot long cord was the perfect size for my bedroom.
My only gripe is that the on/off/volume switch should be bigger. If you need to change a setting in a dark room, you should be able to feel your way around. I've had mine for a couple years now, and I still fumble with it sometimes.
Still, if barking dogs or noisy neighbors are keeping you up, and you don't mind spending a little extra cash, the Marpac Sound Screen 980 might be just what you're looking for.

Costumer Review: I've had trouble sleeping because of background noise for years. I finally bought this because I live in a duplex and my neighbors are loud and erratic in behavior, arguing and moving furniture around at 3:00 am. I was afraid to even try to sleep at home after several days with little sleep and my roommate made me buy this because I was ready to move out.
This product is great. It makes a very fan-like sound, but with no mechanical or cycling sounds, or rattling. This is just a constant whoosh. It has two speeds and you can change the sound of the whoosh by changing the postition of the vent holes on the device. It has a switch right on the side of it, not on the cord so it's easy to use. It's even padded on the bottom to make sure it doesn't vibrate.
I used the low setting last night and slept through the night for the first time in the month since the crazy animals downstairs moved in.
I've been relying on ceiling fans and box fans for background noise for years, this is much better. It's a fuller sound, it covers more, and it doesn't make me cold.
As many others have said in previous reviews, this is unlike those pre-recorded white noise sounds. This cannot repeat, because it's actually making the sound as you hear it.
I travel for a living and stay in a lot of hotels. I look forward to taking this thing with me and blocking out the sounds of neighbor's TV's and talking and vehicles, etc. . . It's very small and lightweight, and seems durable.
